About the Collection Systems Committee
The NWEA Collection Systems Committee supports professionals involved in the operation, maintenance, inspection, rehabilitation, and management of wastewater collection systems throughout Nebraska.
The committee promotes education, professional development, industry awareness, and networking opportunities for collection systems personnel. Committee activities include:
- Collection Systems Operator Certification
- Collection systems training and educational programs
- Conference technical sessions and workshops
- Recognition of outstanding professionals through the Golden Manhole Society
The committee welcomes participation from operators, supervisors, municipalities, consultants, contractors, and others involved in collection systems.
Collection Systems Operator Certification
NWEA is developing a voluntary Collection Systems Operator Certification Program to provide Nebraska collection systems professionals with an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge, advance their careers, and support workforce development within the industry.
The certification program is based on nationally recognized Water Professionals International (WPI/ABC) examinations and is intended for collection systems operators, maintenance personnel, supervisors, contractors, consultants, and others working in the collection systems field.
The program is intended to complement existing wastewater operator certifications while recognizing the unique skills required for collection system operation and maintenance.
Planned Initial Offering
NWEA is currently planning its inaugural certification event for December 2026 or January 2027. The event is expected to include:
- Morning exam preparation and review session
- Lunch and networking opportunity
- Afternoon certification testing

Golden Manhole Society
This Award has been approved by the Water Environment Federation Collection Systems Committee as a way to recognize those who have contributed to the development and professionalism of the Collection System Industry on a national level. It is the desire of the Federation that each Member Association adopt this award, which would be given on the Member Association level.
GMS provides an opportunity to recognize individuals, and their company, for outstanding contributions to the collection systems field.
